As personal credits are usually at a fixed interest rate, repayments are usually the same in the short and medium term.
On applying for a credit, it is important to be very clear about how much we are going to repay the financial entity every month for the full term until the credit is completely returned.
Amortisation is the gradual extinction of the credit granted by the financial entity as it is repaid. It is the payment made for the full return (cancellation) or partial return of the credit. The credit can be amortised in the period agreed with the entity that gave us the credit or earlier. Early amortisation is usually subject to a commission, which will vary in line with the credit’s interest rate. Normally, a higher commission is charged on a fixed interest rate than on a variable rate.
This is a percentage of the capital sum credited, which banks include in the costs of a credit application. There are various kinds of commission, but the most common are: the formalisation fee, paid when the credit is formalised, and the cancellation or prepayment fee, which is only applied when the credit is paid off early and consists of a percentage of the amount amortised (paid off).
The amount to pay at the agreed frequency, usually monthly, but it may be quarterly, half-yearly or annually. This amount includes the part of the credited money that is returned or amortised, plus the corresponding interest.
Sum that the financial entity charges for the service of lending money to its customers. It may be based on a fixed rate (it remains the same throughout the life of the credit) or variable rate (varying in line with a reference index, such as the EURIBOR).
Period during the life of a credit during which only interest is paid and none of the capital is paid off. Total waiting period refers to the period of the credit during which neither interest nor capital is repaid.
The APR indicates the total annual cost of the credit, including the interest rate applied, the expenses and the bank charges. It is very useful for comparing the costs of financial entities’ various products, as it includes the full costs of each product. It is not advisable to compare the APR of variable-interest credits or credits with different repayment terms.
